πŸ“– The simplest parenting hack you can do right now...

Breathe, Read, REPEAT!

'Tis the season to remember to breathe, read more, and do it all again! Holidays, election results, everyday life... there is no better time than NOW for the parenting hack of all hacks that will help bring more calm into your life. In this final issue of "Read More" for 2024, I'm reminding you of the benefits of reading, why this simple act is so effective, and how to encourage a culture of reading in your home for the next several months.

Need to refresh your bookshelves on a budget? CLICK HERE to accept your special invitation to the best sale of the year!

You've probably heard the tip to take a deep breath to calm yourself when you're feeling stressed or anxious. But why read? Besides sounding luxurious to simply curl up on the couch with a cozy blanket and read, there are other proven benefits!

Top 3 benefits of reading:

1) Lowers stress levels almost instantly when you read a book.

2) Exercises your brain and prevents cognitive decline.

3) Encourages empathy and compassion by exposing readers to different perspectives.

Want to expand on the benefits of reading? Try reading aloud to others, like the kids in your life! In fact, if you do nothing else except breathe and read more to your children this holiday season, then you are doing enough. Yep... reading to your kids does more good than any other parenting hack out there.

How is reading to my kids enough? Did you know the brain releases dopamine when you read? This creates happy feelings! And when you cuddle up on the couch to read a book to your child, the act of cuddling releases oxytocin, which promotes feelings of love and connection.

This is why, when you spend quality time reading aloud to your child, you are giving them the BEST gift they could receive this season... a happier, more connected, loving, and PRESENT version of YOU! And that, my friends, will have long-lasting benefits beyond measure. Not to mention, reading does a multitude of other amazing things for the rapidly developing brain in a child.

So say it with me...
BREATHE.
READ.
REPEAT.

3 TIPS to encourage more reading in your home....

  1. Create a cozy reading corner or spot on the couch with a blanket and comfy pillows.
  2. Have books within reach in every room of the house.
  3. Create a habit of "family read aloud time," so that it becomes routine and expected. (Try picking a time of day where you can spend even just 5 minutes to pause and read, before continuing the holiday hustle and bustle).
